(does anyone know who the catcher of the reds is at the moment? I don't know his name but i just saw him take his mask off during this cardinals vs reds game that i'm watching. he looks amazing. like al hrabosky, the mad hungarian, or sal fasano. huge handlebar moustache and a beard.....plus he's kind of fat. simply put, the dude looks awesome. why don't ballyplayers look like this anymore? they have mohawks now. pretty lame.)
i digress. i'm sorry. facial hair on ballplayers is not gonna be the point of this. (though i will be able help to help a good deal of these poor dudes out when i become a barber next year.) the point is that at any moment you can see something totally unique happen when you play or watch baseball. i just saw the tigers pitcher come within one out of throwing (THE THIRD ONE OF THE YEAR!) a perfect game, having it saved by one of the best catches i have ever seen from the centerfielder with no outs in the ninth, only to lose it with two outs in the ninth on a blown call on a play at first base that could have, and should have been, the final out. i felt terrible for the ump who blew the call. i know he's been doing it for a long time. he a much respected guy in the game, by all accounts a great ump..but he blew it, he even came out after and apologized. it was very sad. more exciting though was the fact that this pitcher still got 28 outs in a row in one game!....move over harvey haddix!
i than watched scott rolen get hit by a line drive running the bases, costing the reds the only real threat they had against the cardinals....this guy is not exactly a bone headed baseball player. he knows how to play the game the ball was a heat seeker. it was determined to find him......
....or how about our last Sunday Game? i managed to make one of the best catches of my life, dead on the run from left field. the ball was lined into the gap toward center. by all of my usual standards this is a tough ball to get to. i didn't think i would do it when i first saw it come off the bat, but as i took off, i saw i was getting closer and closer to it. i eventually ran it down on a dead sprint straight across. it hit my glove so hard that it nearly took it off my hands. i rate it as one of my best accomplishments. as much fun as laying on the beach in mexico, it just didn't last as long.
so that's the point. baseball is awesome. at any point, anything can happen and it usually does, when you least expect it, when you want it most.
